Our language teachers respond to individual linguistic needs and review their programmes of study each year to ensure they’re tailored to support every girl.

Key Stage 3
All girls study French from 1st Form, reflecting the French origins of the school and the order of the Sisters of St Martha.

Key Stage 4
Girls follow the Edexcel course, which caters for beginners, intermediate and native speakers.
Keen linguists at this stage have the opportunity to complete French GCSE as an accelerated course, to allow them to study Spanish as an additional GCSE.

Sixth Form (Key Stage 5)
At A-level girls follow the OCR course specification.

Extra and Cross-curricular
Girls can choose from various clubs including Ciné-Club and Conversation with a French assistant. They also enjoy cultural exchange in the form of pen friends, allowing them to use the language in an authentic context with girls of similar ages.

For our annual inter-house languages competition girls learn a French tongue twister to perform in traditional costume in front of the school. And once a year we have a day when all lessons contain a French element – and the meal in the canteen includes onion soup and snails…

Trips & Events
To broaden their horizons, students enjoy trips to France and Morocco, visit French restaurants and sixth-formers undertake work experience in a French-speaking country in Europe. French students from our partner school in Marquise, Saint-Martin, visit us every June and spend two days in school paired up with an English buddy.
